With an excellent cast of characters, suspects and accomplices and sidekicks alike, its the perfect read for girls (and boys) who like their fiction fast and funny, with just enough edge (and romance) to reel in the older readers, but not so much as to dissuade the younger ones. Theres a self- conscious tone to the story-its a little tongue in cheek with its references to the mystery and to the great mystery writers-but this gives the story a delightfully hyper-real feel. The reader is made suspicious of all the characters in turn as Bee, a highly observant detective, shares her theories and observations. This book is a lark, immediately engaging and very, very funny. Like a teenage Agatha Christie, or an indie Nancy Drew, Bee is determined to find Gus killer. A taxidermist-in-training, Bee works at the Natural History Museum and arrives at work one day to learn her boss and mentor has been found dead in the Red Rotunda room-an apparent suicide. He explains how carbon is studied by scientists, as well as its role in the greenhouse effect, and, not least, the impact of manmade emissions. Dag Olav Hessen is our guide as we discover carbon in minerals, rocks, wood, and rain forests. It's the story of balance-between photosynthesis and cell respiration, between building and burning, between life and death. The Many Lives of Carbon is the story of this all-important chemical element, labeled C on our periodic tables. As we face the climate change crisis, it's now more important than ever to understand carbon and its life cycle. And at a molecular level, carbon bonds with oxygen to create carbon dioxide-a gas as vital to our life on this planet as it is detrimental at high levels in our atmosphere. Underneath the surface, carbon is also the basic building block of the cells in our bodies and of all known life on earth. In its pure form, carbon appears as the soft graphite of a pencil or as the sparkling diamond in a woman's engagement ring. “When I was growing up in Iran, my grandma lived with us.” Mina followed her grandma around like a happy shadow, mimicking everything her grandma did. Javaherbin’s story begins in Iran, where she lived as a child before coming to the United States. Life’s lessons are best taught by experience as Mina learns from her loving and generous grandmother. My Grandma and Me, by Mina Javaherbin, an Iranian American, and illustrated by award-winning illustrator Lindsey Yankey, is just such a book. But those lessons are doubly effective when the reader, grandparent, teacher, parent, or babysitter is alert and insightful. As much as their stories may appear to be uncomplicated at a first reading, they often carry important life lessons in the hands of a gifted writer and illustrator. He would often regard it as merciful that most persons of high Intelligence jeer at the inmost mysteries for, he argued, if superior minds were ever placed in fullest contact with the secrets preserved by ancient and lowly cults, the resultant abnormalities would soon not only wreck the world, but threaten the very integrity of the universe. Daily life had for him come to be a phantasmagoria of macabre shadow-studies now glittering and leering with concealed rottenness as in Beardsley's best manner, now hinting terrors behind the commonest shapes and objects as in the subtler and less obvious work of Gustave Dore. “In youth he had felt the hidden beauty and ecstasy of things, and had been a poet but poverty and sorrow and exile had turned his gaze in darker directions, and he had thrilled at the imputations of evil in the world around. As her Elite strength grows, Adelina struggles to control her illusions, and the escalating whispers of fear in her head fuel her mistrust. Lu constructs a fascinating triangle of opposing forces seeking power, and the ensuing twists and epic battles leave many dead, broken, or forever changed. Adelina has learned the hard way that "not all Elites can be allies," and Raffaele and his Daggers have formed their own alliance with Maeve, the northern queen of Beldain, whose dark Elite power can help them seize the Kenettran throne. After acquiring new allies, Adelina heads back to Estenzia to seek revenge. This intense sequel to The Young Elites begins with Dagger Society outcast Adelina and her equally gifted sister, Violetta, seeking other powerful Elites in the city-state of Merroutas after escaping from Teren and the Inquisition Axis's clutches. |
